Since the globalisation has brought the whole world together, translation is becoming more and more important. At the same time, there is always something more than language that should also be translated, which is called localisation. Modern business not only need linguistic translation, but also need accommodating the products or concepts according to the target culture. Some people do not realise the importance of localisation. It is not mere a simple linguistic thing– I mean, language is the major part of a culture, that is for sure. But there are things more than language that need to be localised, too, including colour, pictures (some pictures or patterns are considered offensive in certain culture while not in others) and other stuff. Some professional translation companiesare also doing localisation service. In this case, it is better for translation companies to also pay attention to the non-linguistic part of localisation.

There are so many translators out there singing the praises of all of these ways in which to obtain a translation when in fact what they are doing is actively killing their own career! Shame that the art is disappearing from word!

Thank you for comment. Your experience demands respect and I acknowledge your point and totally agree that the article could be titled to more accurately. It is also interesting to hear that to a certain extent you agree by pointing out that there is some backlash emerging.

I must say Mr. Woodworth that I am very interested in your experience. After 25 years in America I am sure you have witnessed significant change in the country and the way the country perceives the rest of the world. Working as a bi-lingual, bi-cultural American in Germany (for the last 25 years), I would question your conclusion, which implies that ALL Germans have this fear. It is certainly not the case among my acquaintances and business associates, though it doesn’t surprise me that there is some backlash emerging, which may grow. However, it would have been more honest to entitle the article “SOME Germans…”, as there are no figures given on the number or percentage of the population that feels this way.

Common everyday words like “Mission”, “Fruits”, “team” and even “because” are used instead of the Japanese equivalent (and it isn’t even internet slang) which is a real shame and a loss to the Japanese language.
